The 2018 Porsche Cayenne renews its rivalry against the likes of the Range Rover Sport, Maserati Levante and the Toyota Land Cruiser. The Cayenne e-Hybrid, on the other hand, takes on the Volvo XC90 ExcellencePlug-in Hybrid, which is priced at Rs 1.31 crore (ex-showroom Delhi).
Exterior.
In terms design, the third-gen Cayenne looks a lot more leaner and fitter than its predecessor, which has been around in Indian for nearly eight years now. The front end features restyled all-LED headlights and a new bumper with larger air intakes. At the rear, the changes are prominent, with the third-gen SUV getting connected tail lamps with 3D LED light design featuring the Porsche logo at the centre. The Cayenne Turbo now rides on 21-inch wheels instead of the 19-inch units found on its predecessor.
Interior.
When compared to its predecessor, the new Cayenne’s cabin is much more futuristic as well functional and gets a freshly designed dashboard with retro-modern touches like an analogue rev counter flanked by digital readouts and a Panamera-inspired 12.3-inch touchscreen, which Porsche calls the Advanced Cockpit concept.
Other standard features offered on the new Cayenne include a 710 Watt Bose surround sound system, Porsche Dynamic Light System (PDLS), 18-way electrically adjustable front seats, heated steering, heated front and rear seats, front and rear park assist and adaptive air suspension. However, Porsche offers a list of optional extras with the new Cayenne Turbo as well, including rear-wheel steering, four-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, cooled front and rear seats, reversing camera with surround view and 1455 Watt Burmester surround sound system.
Safety
The Cayenne Turbo gets a host of safety features such as Porsche 4D chassis control, Porsche Traction Management, adaptive cruise control, night vision assist, intersection assist, lane change assist and predictive pedestrian assist. It tips the weighing scale at nearly 2 tonnes and gains a new Porsche Surface Coated Brakes with cast-iron disc and special tungsten-carbide coating for additional stopping power and reduction in friction. The significant driver assistance systems made available are include Night Vision Assist, Lane Change Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, adaptive cruise control and Traffic Jam Assist.
Like its predecessor, the 2018 Cayenne Turbo is also powered by a V8 petrol engine. However, it is a 550PS 4.0-litre unit instead of the 520PS 4.8-litre engine which was offered earlier. Power from the engine is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. Porsche claims that the Cayenne Turbo can go from 0-100kmph in 4.1 seconds and has a top speed of 286kmph.
The Cayenne, on the other hand, is powered by a 3.0 V6 petrol engine that makes 340PS/450Nm with an 8-speed AT. It has a claimed top speed of 245kmph and can go from 0-100kmph in 5.9 seconds.
Apart from the Cayenne and Cayenne Turbo, Porsche has also launched the Cayenne e-Hybrid in India. It will be powered by the same 340PS V6 petrol engine like the standard Cayenne but it is supplemented by 136PS electric motor, taking total power output to 462PS/700Nm. Power is being sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. This combination is enough to take the hybrid SUV from 0-100kmph in 5 seconds before achieving a top speed of 253kmph. The Stuttgart-based carmaker has confirmed that the Cayenne E-Hybrid has an all-electric range of 44km and can do speeds of up to 135kmph.
Porsche is reported to introduce a number of plug-in hybrid variants derived from the V6 and V8 engines and they will have different capabilities. For example, the V8 plug-in hybrid model will be based on the E-Hybrid system of the Panamera Turbo S and is expected to produce a maximum power output of 700 horsepower.
The all-new Cayenne Turbo uses the brand’s 4-litre V8 biturbo engine producing 550 PS and 770 Nm of peak torque sent to all four wheels via a new eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission. It makes 30 PS an 20 Nm more than its predecessor and they help the SUV to achieve zero to 100 kmph in just 4.1 seconds or just 3.9 seconds when fitted with optional Sport Chrono pack. It has a top speed of 286 kmph.
