The new 2018 Hyundai Santro is all set for launch today. The company has already provided a whole bunch of details about the car and we've had a small drive of the car too. In fact, we've given you a first drive report already. 2018 marks the 20th anniversary of the Santro badge and the company is bringing in an all new version of the car which now comes with more feature offerings. Sources have shared with carandbike that the small car has notched up 14,208 bookings within the first 9 days of pre-bookings having been opened for a token of Rs. 11,100, on October 10 2018.
It took Hyundai three years to develop the all-new Santro and the company has invested $100 million (over Rs. 700 crores) for the purpose. It will soon replace the Eon to become Hyundai's entry segment car which is built on the B.A. platform that couldn't be made ready to meet the stringent crash test requirements.
Engine.
New Hyundai Santrofeatures a 1.1-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that comes from the company's Epsilon engine family. The motor is capable of churning out a maximum of 68 bhp and develop a peak torque of 99 Nm, and Hyundai says that it's already BS-VI ready. Additionally, the 2018 Santro will also come with a factory fitted CNG kit, which can hold up to 8 kg of gas, and offer a reduced power output of 58 bhp, while developing the same 99 Nm of peak torque. Transmission duties are taken care of by a 5-speed manual gearbox in both the versions, however, the petrol trim also gets an optional 5-speed automated manual transmission (AMT) unit. The AMT unit is developed by Hyundai in-house and uses an electric actuator instead of a hydraulic, which is controlled by a separate electric unit. The petrol engine offers a mileage of 20.3 kmpl.
New Hyundai santro 2018 new paint color
The all-new Hyundai Santro will be offered in seven colours. There will also be a special version available sporting a new paint shade - Diana Green. Apart from the new colour, the Santro special version will also come with green seatbelts, green accents around the AC vents, audio knob and gear lever, while the cabin will be finished in black.
Shahrukh Khan talks about his association with the brand and also about how he was shooting at the point when Hyundai first approached him with the idea of becoming a brand ambassador for the brand. He was explained the mechanics of the car and being a science student he understood most of it and since then the company has grown leaps and bounds
Exterior.
Hyundai has refrained from using much chrome on the Santro. There's a chrome outline on the front grille, but just on the periphery. Door handles, even on the top variant, come without any chrome, and we're not complaining. The lack of chrome can also be seen on the inside - even the Hyundai logo on the steering wheel is a black affair. But if we were to nitpick, the lack of alloy wheels even on the top-spec Asta variant is a bit of a letdown and LEDs in the tail lamps would have made it look richer without adding to car's cost. The B-pillar is also finished in body-colour, much like cars from a decade before. Modern-day cars generally get blacked-out B-pillars, which helps mask some of the visual mass.
Interior.
The cabin is not new to us as we have seen it in a bunch of spy images earlier. In fact, we shared some exclusive interior images of the special green colour Asta trim which comes with green styling elements. This one, however, gets the regular dual tone black and grey treatment, mainly displaying the large 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system which is equipped with smartphone connectivity and supports Apple Car Play and Android Auto. On either side, we have larger aircon vents with a bunch of buttons and knobs positioned below of in-car controls. The steering wheel also gets the dual tone treatment with mounted controls for telephony, audio, and more.
The new Santro is Hyundai's work-in-progress to make its complete product line-up comply with the upcoming crash test norms. The 2018 Hyundai Santro is based on an advance version of Hyundai's more robust H.A. platform that underpinned the i10. On the safety front, the new Hyundai Santro only gets driver side airbags as standard while dual airbags are available on the higher variants. However, seat belt with pre-tensioners and ABS with EBD are standard across variants. In any case it will get dual-airbags as standard in a matter of time in order to meet the upcoming safety norms.
In the marketplace, the new Hyundai Santro will take on the Tata Tiago, Renault Kwid 1.0, Datsun Redi-Go 1.0, Maruti Suzuki Celerio and considering Hyundai's tall-boy stand, even the Maruti Suzuki WagonR.
