The massive Japanese automaker Toyota has said that a breakthrough in solid-state batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) is getting closer. The achievement may result in EV batteries becoming more affordable, as they account for almost half of the total cost of an electric vehicle. The in-house solid-state batteries from Toyota Motor are anticipated to have a range of up to 1,200 km on a single charge, which is almost twice as long as regular EVs. This would significantly reduce purchasers' range anxiety and hasten the global adoption of electric vehicles. Additionally, these EVs have a shorter wait time to recharge. With solid-state batteries, Toyota says EV charging times might be as short as ten minutes.
By 2028, Toyota intends to equip its electric vehicles with high-performance solid-state batteries. "I think the most important thing at the moment is to put the solid-state batteries into the world and we will consider expansion in volume from there," stated Koji Sato, President of Toyota Motor. The Teiho facility of Toyota, which is situated in the Japanese prefecture of Aichi, will be responsible for producing these batteries. The automaker and energy company Idemitsu Kosan have partnered to build these batteries.
How do solid-state batteries work?
An anode, a solid electrolyte, and a cathode make up a solid-state battery. Solid-state batteries enable 'rapid movement of ions' and a 'higher tolerance of high voltages and temperatures,' according to Toyota. These elements make these batteries more capable of charging more quickly and providing greater performance in a smaller package. Toyota addressed the lower battery life with new technology. It states that compared to EVs with lithium-ion batteries, solid-state batteries are anticipated to provide a 20% gain in cruising range.
Comparing lithium-ion and solid-state batteries
The electrolyte used in lithium-ion batteries is liquid, as opposed to solid-state batteries. Lithium battery packs have a number of drawbacks, including the possibility of breakage, leaks, and even fire. Graphite electrode, metal oxide electrode, and lithium salt electrolyte are the standard components of a lithium-ion battery.
